To celebrate Washington's Statehood Centennial in 1989, between 1987 and 1991, the Port of Grays Harbor, the City of Westport, and a hardy group of dedicated volunteers created
29 framed porcelain plaques that feature silhouettes of historic vessels commonly found on Graus Harbor. The artworks were then placed along Westport's newly constructed wide mile-long Esplanade walkway at the Westport Marina.
In "They Came by Sea," historian and well-known regional author, Ruth McCausland, offers detailed descriptions and highly entertaining anecdotes about each vessel and the vital historic role these watercraft played in the development and success of the many communities along the shores of Grays Harbor.
